Providing Canadian Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons and dentists with the tools and training to manage difficult airway scenarios with ease.
Course Objectives:
To provide awareness and experience in managing various difficult airway scenarios. There are separate Adult and Pediatric components to this course. The College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta has mandated continuing education in difficult airway management every 2 years to ensure appropriate maintenance of competency requirements.
Course Content: A combination of didactic lectures, scenarios in a SIM lab, hands on training, one on one training, mentorship and appropriate debriefing. The goals are to be OMFS specific (when indicated) as well as Dentist or Dental Specialist Specific to recreate real life scenarios to reinforce positive skills and provide constructive critique in focused learning situations.

FACULTY INSTRUCTORS
Dr. Miller Smith is the organizer and scientific chair for the Difficult Airway Management Course in Calgary, Alberta, held at the University of Calgary Advanced Technical Skills Simulation Laboratory (ATSSL - in both the Surgical and Clinical Skills Simulation Laboratories). He is Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Surgery, section of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and works out of South Calgary Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Mahogany Oral Maxillofacial Surgery. He is NSQIP surgical lead for Peter Lougheed Centre and involved in the Cleft and Craniofacial Multidisciplinary Team at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Dr. Smith has successfully trained over 150 Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons through the CAOMS, AOMSA and University of Toronto Difficult Airway Management Courses.
Dr. Karl Cuddy is co-organizer and scientific chair for the Difficult Airway Management Course for OMFS. He is Assistant Professor of University of Toronto, Director of Surgical Education and Maxillofacial Trauma, and Site Director of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at Princess Margaret Hospital. Dr. Cuddy has been co-chair and scientific lead for all of the Difficult Airway Management Courses to date, and is the primary trainer for Front of Neck Access (FONA) in the hands-on surgical skills lab.
Dr. Meredith Hutton is scientific chair and Anesthesia lead for the Difficult Airway Management Course. She underwent fellowship training in Advanced Airway Management at Stanford University and has a keen interest in Airway Assessment, and management including anesthesia adjuncts and fiberoptic. She is NSQIP anesthesia lead for Peter Lougheed Centre and full time clinician at the PLC Hospital in Calgary.
