Module 1: Overview of Implant Procedures
Patient Selection, Treatment Planning, Introduction to surgical techniques with Model Surgery

This module is a great introduction to implant dentistry and is our introductory module for our residency program. It can also be taken as a stand alone module for those who want a general overview and exposure to implant dentistry before committing to our more in depth residency program.

This module focuses on the criteria necessary for selecting the right cases for implant prosthodontics and determining which cases are not appropriate for implant prosthodontics. The fundamentals of developing a comprehensive treatment plan that is restoratively driven will be covered.

The most recent scientific literature on the biological concepts of osseointegration, as well as the most recent restorative and surgical protocols, are reviewed.

The criteria for fabricating a radiographic guide and converting it into a surgical guide will be taught to participants using time-tested traditional techniques. Participants will also be introduced to the digital workflow in treatment planning for dental implant surgery and restoration. Doctors will learn to recognize the benefits and drawbacks of each technique.

Hands-on exercises with customized models are used to review the basic implant surgical armamentarium. The surgical protocol and armamentarium will be reinforced with video of implant surgery. Participants will also learn about the procedures and requirements of the laboratory steps.

The pre-planning requirements for implant surgery will be thoroughly reviewed for participants. Following that, the fundamentals of guided surgical protocol are reviewed in a step-by-step fashion to provide safe, predictable surgery.

Basic surgical techniques such as incision and flap design, suturing, drilling protocol, anesthesia, and wound healing will be reviewed didactically so that participants can place implants safely. This will be reinforced through video demonstrations, hands-on exercises with porcine mandibles, and model exercises where doctors will place implants.

The requirements for a proper implant consent form will be discussed, and participants will be given a template of consent forms for implant surgery and restoration to use when choosing their patient for Module II.
